Home Row Lesson

What is the home row?

The home row is the foundation of touch typing. The index, middle, ring, and pinky fingers of your left hand rest on A, S, D, F, while the same fingers on your right hand rest on J, K, L, ;. Your thumbs always stay above the space bar.

The F and J keys have small raised bumps β€” they help you find the correct position without looking down at the keyboard.

How should you practice?

  • Place your hands on the home row and return each finger to its key after every keystroke.
  • Try typing without looking at the keyboard; it’s normal to be slow at first.
  • Prioritize accuracy over speed. Good habits bring speed automatically over time.

Start with the exercise below and focus on keeping your hands steady.
