Turkish F-Keyboard Home Row Lesson
What is the F-keyboard?
The F-keyboard is a Turkish keyboard layout defined by the TS 2117 standard, designed around the letter and syllable frequency of Turkish. Unlike the Q layout, letters are placed so the most frequently used Turkish letters fall on your strongest fingers, which means less finger travel and faster, less tiring typing.
The F-keyboard’s home row
On the F-keyboard, the home row reads left to right as: U İ E A Ü T K M L Y Ş
| Finger | Key |
|---|---|
| Left pinky | U |
| Left ring | İ |
| Left middle | E |
| Left index | A |
| Right index | K |
| Right middle | M |
| Right ring | L |
| Right pinky | Y |
The Ü and T keys sit in the middle zone reachable by the left index finger, while Ş sits in the zone reachable by the right pinky, and both are used less often.
Coming from a Q layout?
If you’re used to the Q layout, it’s normal to mix up letter positions at first. Try typing without looking at the keyboard, and let your fingers slowly adjust to the new positions. Over time you’ll notice the F-keyboard lets you type faster with less hand movement.
How should you practice?
- Place your hands on the home row (U İ E A / K M L Y) and return each finger to its key after every keystroke.
- Prioritize correct finger habits over speed.
- Start by slowly repeating the short syllables in this exercise.
