Special Symbols (@ # % & *)

When do we use these symbols?

The @ symbol appears in email addresses, # is used for tags on social media, % marks percentages and discounts, and & is a shorthand for “and.” These symbols show up constantly in everyday digital writing.

• Most symbols are typed by holding Shift while pressing a number key.
• The @ symbol is usually typed with the right index finger, combined with Shift.

How should you practice?

• Picture which key you need to Shift-press before each symbol.
• Try typing the dots and the @ sign in email addresses back to back without pausing.
• Reinforce the habit of typing the percent sign right after a number, with no space.
