Parentheses & Quotation Marks

Where do parentheses and quotes show up?

Parentheses add extra information; quotation marks are used for direct quotes. Both appear constantly in everyday writing, reports, and news text.

• The parenthesis keys sit on the top row and are typed with the right pinky and ring finger, held with Shift.
• The quotation mark is also typed with Shift; the same key opens and closes the quote.

How should you practice?

• Think of opening a parenthesis or quote, typing the word inside, and closing it as a single continuous motion.
• Pay attention to hand coordination on these Shift-combined characters: one hand holds Shift while the other presses the key.
• Count each mark you open in your head so you don’t forget to close it.
