How the estimate works

The calculator counts the characters in your text, spaces included, divides by five to get typing words, and divides that by your WPM. That's the same definition typing tests use, so if you took a test on this site, the estimate matches your real speed on similar text.

When you only enter a word count, the calculator assumes an average English word of about six characters including the space after it. Real texts with long words, numbers or lots of punctuation take longer.

Planning longer typing work

Nobody types at their test speed for an hour straight. For long jobs, add 10–20% for fatigue, corrections and reading the source. If you're copying from paper or transcribing audio, the real figure is often half your test speed or less — measure it once on a short sample before quoting a deadline.

Typing time — frequently asked questions

How long does it take to type 1,000 words?

About 30 minutes at 40 WPM, 20 minutes at 60 WPM and 15 minutes at 80 WPM, assuming average-length words (about six characters with the space) and no breaks.

Why use characters instead of words?

Because "internationalisation" and "a" are both one word. Counting characters, then dividing by five, gives a fair estimate whatever the text.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser; the text never leaves your device.
