How is the German typing test scored?
It counts correct characters, divides by five for average word length, and divides by minutes elapsed for WPM. Accuracy is correct keystrokes over total. The formula is the same for every language on the site.
Do I need a QWERTZ keyboard?
No. Any layout works — the test reads the characters you type, not your hardware. QWERTZ users reach ä, ö, ü and ß directly; on QWERTY you can use a German or US-International layout, or those characters simply appear less often.
Why do German words feel slower to type?
German has long compound words and averages more letters per word than English. Your WPM may read lower even when your fingers are moving just as fast — that's the word length, not your speed.
