This French typing test uses the same engine as the main typing speed test, with a French word pool: high-frequency verbs, nouns, connectors and everyday vocabulary, sampled at random. Your result is shown as WPM (words per minute) and accuracy, using a character-based formula that stays consistent across every language.

French relies heavily on accented characters — é, è, ê, à, ç, î, ô, ë — and on the AZERTY layout in France and Belgium. Practising French words in a stream is the quickest way to make those keys automatic, whether you're on AZERTY or QWERTY. Choose a time mode from 15 to 120 seconds or a fixed word count, and begin — free, no account, no ads.

French typing test — frequently asked questions

How is the French typing test scored?

Every correct character is counted, divided by five for average word length, then divided by minutes elapsed to give WPM. Accuracy is correct keystrokes over total keystrokes. The same formula runs for all seven languages, so scores are comparable.

Does it work with an AZERTY keyboard?

Yes. The test doesn't care about your physical layout — it reads the characters you produce. AZERTY, QWERTY and QWERTZ all work. AZERTY users usually find the accented letters easier because they're direct keys.

Why is my French WPM lower than my English WPM?

French words average more letters than English ones, and accented characters can need an extra keystroke on some layouts. A 5–15% gap between your French and English speed is normal and closes with practice.

Is the French typing test free?

Yes. No sign-up, no email, no ads. Your best score stays in your browser unless you opt in to the leaderboard.
