WPM vs CPM: What's the Difference and How to Convert
The one-line answer
WPM (words per minute) and CPM (characters per minute) measure the same thing in different units. Typing tests count one “word” as five characters, spaces included, so CPM = WPM × 5 and WPM = CPM ÷ 5. 40 WPM is 200 CPM; 60 WPM is 300 CPM.
Why tests use five-character words
Real words vary wildly in length — “a” and “communication” shouldn’t count the same. Fixing a word at five characters makes results comparable between texts. TypeWPM follows this standard: every correctly typed character counts, spaces included, and your result screen shows both WPM and CPM.
Which unit should you use?
- WPM is standard in English-speaking countries and on most online tests.
- CPM / keystrokes per minute is common in many other countries’ job ads and exams — Turkish “vuruş”, German “Anschläge”, Spanish “pulsaciones”, Portuguese “toques”.
- KPH (keystrokes per hour) is CPM × 60 and is typical for data-entry and 10-key jobs.
CPM is also fairer between languages: German or Turkish words are longer than English ones on average, so counting real words would penalise them.
Watch out for exam rules
Some exams subtract a penalty for every error, count Shift as an extra keystroke, or count real words instead of five-character ones. Always check the rules of the specific test you’re preparing for — the typing test for jobs lets you set duration and error penalty to match.
