WPM stands for words per minute. It is calculated from the characters you type correctly: every five characters count as one word, divided by the time in minutes. Because it uses a fixed word length, your score stays comparable whatever words you type. Accuracy is shown next to it, since fast but sloppy typing is not really fast.

This WPM test runs for 60 seconds by default, the standard used by most benchmarks and job screening tests. The timer starts on your first keystroke. Afterwards you see your WPM, accuracy, correct and incorrect keys and an error map. Switch to 15, 30 or 120 seconds, or to a word count, and test in 30 languages. Your best score is saved in your browser.

WPM test — frequently asked questions

What is a good WPM score?

Around 40 WPM is average for adults. 60 to 70 WPM is fast, 80 to 100 WPM is professional level, and competitive typists exceed 120 WPM. Beginners often start at 20 to 30 WPM.

How is WPM calculated?

Correctly typed characters are divided by five (the standard word length) and then by the minutes elapsed. A 60-second test with 250 correct characters gives 50 WPM.

Why does my WPM change between tests?

Word difficulty, warm-up, posture and concentration all vary. Take two or three tests and use the average, or your best score, as your real speed.
